Sheet Music (Section M)
The library houses over 20,000 items of printed sheet music in various formats, focusing on instrumental and vocal music from the early Baroque period through to the contemporary period. It also includes some music from outside of these areas. Sheet music formats include full scores, miniature scores, scores and parts, vocal-piano scores, piano reductions, and arrangements of works for various instruments.
Music Literature (Section ML and MT)
In addition to sheet music, the library has nearly 4,000 books of music literature, including music history, music theory, analysis, and pedagogy, etudes, composer biographies, thematic catalogues, repertoire lists by instrument, and more.
Nearly 40 professional periodical subscriptions keep readers apprised of trends in the music industry based on their instrument. Popular titles include The Double Reed, The Clarinet, The Journal of Singing, and Horn Call. Periodicals do not circulate, and are for in-library use only.
Approximately 5000 items remain to be catalogued by the library. Backlogged items do not appear in the online catalogue, but most of this section is browsable on the shelves and are ordered by instrument or genre. If you find a backlogged item, bring it to library staff to have it catalogued. Turnaround time is anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 days. Some backlogged items are shelved according to their subject area.
Audio / Video
Nearly 20,000 compact discs and over 500 DVDs of recorded performances from the early Baroque to contemporary period are available for loan. Users can browse DVDs, but CDs must be searched on the online catalogue. Staff will retrieve compact discs for you.
RCM students, faculty, and staff in good standing have access to a suite of research and video streaming electronic resources such as Naxos Music Library, Medici.tv, MetOpera, and Oxford Music Online. The Performance Collection is the Royal Conservatory’s orchestra library. It comprises over 1000 works and is intended to support official RCM ensembles and large orchestras. This collection of score and parts is searchable in the catalogue, but is restricted to authorized RCM personnel only. Many sets remain to be catalogued. Librarians from community orchestras may also contact the library for consultation.
